Get This Party Started
I am the Maid of Honor for a wedding to be held next fall. When is the appropriate time to throw a bridal shower for the bride-to-be?
Angie - Independence, MO

Anytime is a good time for a party! The proper time to throw a bridal shower for the bride-to-be is typically two months to two weeks before the wedding date.

Tipping DJs
I've noticed on several disc jockey web sites numerous responses to this simple question, "How much should I tip my disc jockey?" Will you answer this for me once and for all?
Jon - Prairie Village, KS

Jon, this is a simple one if you follow my rule on tipping. Never tip a professional because to do so would be an insult. For instance, would you tip your doctor for doing her job? Why then would you tip your deejay for doing his job? The simple answer is you do not. Now for the hard part, ensuring that you hire a professional deejay. To do so, you must understand that the deejay profession is loaded with many amateurs and start-up companies. Always call around and compare pricing, but when you talk to disc jockeys, do not judge them on their prices alone. Good personality, 5+ years experience, and satisfied clients all scream professional. Take my advice, this is the last part of your wedding budget that you should cut. Remember, a deejay accounts for over 80% of your overall guest satisfaction, and a professional disc jockey will charge you for what he's worth. In the end, if you've hired a professional disc jockey company, I guarantee they'd appreciate a glowing letter of thanks more than any monetary gratuity.

Who Pays for What?
My fiancé seems to think he should flip the bill for his groomsmen's tuxedos. Is this right, and if so, should I also pay for the bridesmaids' dresses?
Casey, Overland Park, KS

Wow, your fiancé is a generous man. I say this because in recent decades it has been typical for attendants to pay for their own attire. Keep in mind, however, that in this day and age when bridesmaid dresses can cost anywhere from $100.00 to thousands of dollars, the bride should exercise caution when choosing bridesmaid apparel. If you find yourself choosing dresses and accessories that are more expensive than the average, currently $200.000-$300.00 each, then perhaps you should pay the cost or at the very least, offer to pay a portion of the cost.

Make It Legal
Really quick, I need to know about getting a marriage license in Missouri. Where do I go to get one? What should I have with me? How much are they? Can you help me out?
Mark - Kansas City, MO

Of coarse I can help you out. Here's what you need to know to get a marriage license in the State of Missouri. First, grab your fiancé because you will need to apply together in person and with your Driver's Licenses, Birth Certificates, and Social Security cards. Next, go to your county courthouse to visit your county's Recorder of Deeds. Once there, you can apply for your marriage license. Blood tests are not required in Missouri and the cost varies depending on courthouse, usually between $35.00 and $50.00. Missouri has a three day waiting period, so wait three days and then go pick up your license. With license in hand, be sure to use it because Missouri issued licenses expire 30 days after they have been picked up from the courthouse. One last thing, just FYI, the officiant is responsible for returning the completed license to the Recorder of Deeds within fifteen days after the ceremony.
